Shamorie Ponds Named to Watch List for West Award

Jamaica, NY—A freshman campaign that saw Brooklyn native Shamorie Ponds score 573 total points in a single season, has made his presence known to award givers, as Ponds was named to the Preseason Watch List for the Jerry West Award yesterday.

The award, named after legendary basketball hall of famer Jerry West, garners the nation’s best shooting guard.

Ponds, who broke the rookie record in total points scored in a season, previously set by D’Angelo Harrison with 544, put up an additional 29, which capped off a rookie season that has been arguably the best ever by a Red Storm student-athlete.

Shamorie ranked fifth in the Big East Conference with 17.4 points per game last season as well.

Others included on this list included Khadeen Carrington from Seton Hall University, Grayson Allen of the Duke Blue Devils, and Marcus Foster from Creighton University.

The watch list will be cut from 20 to 10 in mid-February before being cut a final time to five in March. A winner will be announced at the ESPN Basketball Awards Show in Los Angeles on April 6th, 2018.
